Arthroscopy is a surgical procedure used to visualize, diagnose and treat problems inside a joint. A small incision is made and pencil-sized instruments are inserted that contain a small lens and lighting system to magnify and illuminate the structures inside the joint. The images inside the joint are relayed to a TV monitor, allowing the doctor to make the diagnosis and complete the surgery through a few tiny incisions, rather than a large open incision. This may lead to an easier recovery period and less pain.
